President Hichilema Commissions Nakonde Border Upgrade

President Hakainde Hichilema has commissioned the first phase of the upgraded Nakonde One Stop Border Post, describing the new facilities as a win for all. He also pledged support for the hardworking people of Nakonde district.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Hichilema said the upgrade will boost government revenue, which will fund social programmes such as school feeding, free education, and classroom construction.

Phase one included procurement of modern equipment, notably a high-speed scanner that clears vehicles in 30 seconds, down from 30 minutes. He directed that phase two begin, focusing on terminal building improvements.

The President thanked traditional leaders for their support and land provision, stressing the importance of partnerships. He assured residents that projects such as the Zambia–Tanzania Interconnector will benefit the district.

Provincial House of Chiefs Chairperson, Chief Katyetye, praised Hichilema’s leadership, saying the upgraded border will speed up goods clearance, reduce delays, and benefit the wider region. He reaffirmed the chiefs’ readiness to provide land for future projects.

British High Commissioner to Zambia, Rebecca Terzeon, called the upgrade a vital step in strengthening regional trade and stimulating growth. She noted Nakonde handles about 20 percent of Zambia’s trade and said the high-speed scanner marks progress in inspections and logistics.

The $10 million project was financed by a grant from the British government.
