Mama Dr. Maureen Mwanawasa – First Lady from 2001 to 2008
Maureen Mwanawasa was born on 28th April,1963 in Kabwe, Central Zambia. She became Zambia’s third First Lady in 2002. This was after her Spouse’s election to the Office of President, Dr Levy Patrick Mwanawasa. She served as First Lady until 2008 following the demise of President Mwanawasa who passed away while in office.
As First Lady and a qualified lawyer, she championed the cause for women and girls throughout the country under the Maureen Mwanawasa Community Initiative (MMCI) which she founded. Maureen also served as president of the Organisation of African First Ladies against HIV/AIDS and founder of the MMCI in 2002.
